چکیده

A look at the spatial variation in male and female agricultural wages in India throws up a seeming paradox: gender differentials are the largest in the southern regions of India that are otherwise favourable to women. Boserup (1970) hypothesized that this is due to the greater labor force participation of women in these regions. This is not obvious as greater female labor supply could depress male wages as well. This paper undertakes a formal test of the Boserup proposition. Econometrically, the main challenge is to relate wages to exogenous variation in labor supply. The results show that differences in female labor supply are able to explain 55% of difference in gender wage differential between northern and southern states of India.

Adieu Rabenmutter – The effect of culture on fertility, female labour supply, the gender wage gap and childcare

This paper studies the effect of cultural attitudes on childcare provision, fertility, female labour force participation and the gender wage gap. Cross-country data show that fertility, female labour force participation and childcare are positively correlated with each other, while the wage gap seems to be negatively correlated with these variables. The paper presents a model with endogenous fe...

International Trade, the Gender Wage Gap, Female Labor Force Participation and Growth

This paper analyzes the effect of international trade on the gender wage gap and the resulting impact on households’ trade-off between female labor force participation (FLFP) and fertility. We argue that whenever trade expands sectors intensive in female labor, the gender wage gap widens and FLFP falls. In a model where male labor and female labor are two distinct factors of production we disti...

Occupational Segregation and the Gender Wage Gap Revisited:

This paper reexamines the relationship between occupational sex segregation and the gender gap in earnings. While there is no dispute that predominately female occupations pay less than male occupations, there is considerable disagreement as to whether this wage gap actually reflects gender discrimination in the labor market or productivity differences among workers. Several recent papers have ...

Measuring links between labor monopsony and the gender pay gap in Brazil

This paper focuses on gender differences in job mobility and earnings for workers in Brazil. Monopsony theory suggests a link between the wage elasticity of labor supply and wage penalties. Should one group of workers be less elastic in their supply choices, that group is predicted to earn less than others. To measure wage elasticity, I estimate a hazard model on voluntary job separations using...

Salient Gender Difference in the Wage Elasticity of General Practitioners' Labour Supply

Recent years have witnessed a growing proportion of female general practitioners (GPs) worldwide. Because female GPs tend to work fewer hours than male GPs, this continuing trend may accelerate the shortage of GPs. This paper investigates the gender di erence in the wage elasticity of Australian GPs by maximum likelihood estimation of labour supply and wage equations. Quantitative information r...
